- A few years back, I acquired an old top-loading washer (not a HE washer), and ever since I bought it, it has always smelled like mildew, probably from sitting unused. I decided to give it a try when I noticed it for sale. I didn't think it would work at all, but amazingly, it did—and with cold water, not the recommended hot. And it worked flawlessly the first time. The fact that I didn't use hot water could have contributed to the fact that I didn't find the aroma to be as overpowering as some people do.
